Talk About Tamir:

At only 12 years old, Tamir Rice enjoyed sports, arts & crafts, and was described by staff at his elementary school as “a pleasant boy.” An unfortunate turn of events would change a fun day at the park into a horrific tragedy in the blink of an eye.

At approximately 3:30pm, Officer Timothy Loehmann and Officer Frank Garmback arrived at the Cudell Recreation Center in response to a 9-1-1 call where the dispatcher was told at least twice that someone was waving a gun on the playground but he was “probably a juvenile” and it was “probably a fake.” This information was never relayed to the officers who rushed into the park, shouted from their vehicle for Tamir to drop the gun, and Officer Loehmann proceeded to fire 2 shots into Tamir’s torso from a distance of 10 feet away. According to surveillance cameras, the entire incident only lasted seconds. For more than 4 minutes, Tamir lay on the floor taking his last breaths as officers slammed his 14 year old sister to the ground when she attempted to run to her brothers side. Tamir Rice died the next day.

We all know the gun ended up being a fake and many criticized the entire tragedy from the dispatcher not relaying critically important information, to the officers handling of the “suspect” and definitely their lack of urgency to save Tamir’s life during the four minutes after he was shot.

The only consequence from the case besides monetary settlements, was the 9-1-1 dispatcher who was placed on leave for a mere eight days following the phone call. Neither officer was charged and after investigation, the case was dismissed.

Today we remember Tamir Rice, we #SayHisName and tell his story because #BlackLivesMatter
